Sandy Weymouth is a woodworker whose focus is creating functional, custom-made, contemporary furniture. His education started in the sciences, and after fourteen years working in the environmental consulting and engineering fields he decided to switch careers and start making the Scandinavian style furniture he had grown to love.
While taking a woodworking class at the Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, Sandy learned about the furniture making program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston’s North End. He signed up for a 3-month intensive furniture course at NBSS and continued on to the 2-year Furniture and Cabinet Making Program. In June of 2018 he graduated from NBSS and officially started his career in woodworking under the name Sawtimber, a word that describes wood suitable for sawing into lumber.
In 2022, Sandy opened South Shore Woodworks in Weymouth, MA with the goal of providing woodworkers access to commercial-grade woodworking machinery. The shop, which includes bench, machine, and finish rooms as well as a shared office, accommodates up to five woodworkers who rent space on a monthly basis. One of the most important aspects of tenant shops is the gathering of experience and knowledge under one roof. They can attract woodworkers of all ages and experience which can bring a large amount of knowledge, design, and methodology into one woodshop. All tenants benefit from this communal sharing of ideas.
Sandy lives in Hingham, MA with his wife and three kids. His other woodworking interests include bowl turning and CNC machining, and he has, and always will have, a lifelong desire to be on the water fishing.
